Dinobot was perhaps one of the most complex characters
in the Beast Wars. He's enigmatic, restless with conflicting
thoughts and emotions, which is why he's one of the most loved Beast
Warriors. Originally a Predacon, Dinobot arrived on Earth
stressed and annoyed, for the planet had at the time two moons,
leading him to believe Megatron had led them all to the wrong planet.
He called Megatron an idiot (the first and possibly the only
bot to brave such an insult) and challenged him over leadership
of the renegade Predacons. Megatron betrayed Dinobot by instead
having Skorponok shoot Dinobot unawares, resulting in Dinobot being
booted out of the Predacons. Dinobot, even more annoyed and
aggressive, then challenged Optimus Primal for leadership over the
Maximals. The fight was interrupted by the Predacons and Dinobot
ended up joining the Maximals under leadership of Optimus, who he
had respect for after he saved his life and proved a worthy opponent.
What made Dinobot especially interesting was his knowledge of the
Golden Disk and its power. He knew his fate was tied into
these disks and they haunted him, leading him to eventually stealing
the disks from Megatron, hiding one and giving the other to Rhinox.
To make his character a little less heavy,
the writers included a somewhat inevitable conflict between Dinobot
and the Maximal Rattrap. They were opposites, they disliked
each other and their constant bickering proved very entertaining.
However, beneath it all, the two found were actually friends, having
a love-hate relationship of sorts.
Dinobot continued to struggle with his identity
and beliefs and soon after realizing this was in fact Earth he was
standing on, he decided to rejoin the Predacons, believing that
Megatron would achieve victory. Although he only stayed with
them for one episode (after making up his mind that Megatron was
insane), he unfortunately gave the hidden disk back to Megatron.
When he rejoined the Maximals he felt guilty and frustrated.
This was worsened by the fact that the Maximals were slightly bitter
towards him as a result of his actions, particularly Rattrap.
Dinobot proved his worth in the war in the episode
'Code of Hero'. While out on patrol Dinobot discovered (thanks
to a warning from Cheetor who had to return to base for repairs)
that Megatron was up to no good. In fact, Megatron had used
the disks to find the valley in which the humans had originated.
It was because of the help of the humans in the future that the
Autobots had won over the Decepticons. Although he himself
originated from the Decepticons, he knew that if Megatron was victorious,
Cybertron would suffer under his insane rule. He single-handedly
took out the Predacons (who were setting the valley alight and preparing
to kill the anthropoids inside) one by one but by the time he faced
Megatron, he was terribly damaged, weak and drained of energy.
Megatron didn't have to do much to finish Dinobot off but Dinobot
managed to make a final stand, using a stick with a sharp stone
fixed within it as a weapon and knocked Megatron down. Megatron
lost his hold over the disk which Dinobot took, and with the last
of his energy, he destroyed the disk with his eye beams. He crashed
to the ground as the Maximals arrived, but Dinobot had done their
job. Dinobot died surrounded by his comrades. Rattrap
was perhaps the most affected by his death and clutched his hand
until his spark left his corpse and ascended to the Matrix.
Dinobot will always be remembered as the strong,
the conflicted, the brave, the honorable and one of the most interesting
characters in the Beast Wars.
