Posting this from... an actual radio studio!

Where you can post announcements and other cool things. Doesn't have to be BW-related.

Posting this from... an actual radio studio!

Unread post by Outtsyder »

I REALLY lucked out with this tonight. After several months of trying to get arrangements to work out, I finally got a chance to come up with my stepbrother and stepcousin to watch them do their Caribbean music radio show tonight! There was an online computer in this studio, so they gave me a chance to come to BWInt and let you know where I am right now.

And you're not going to believe this, but they also let me do a short on-the-air spot using my Gollum voice! :D If I can, I'll see if I can get a copy of a snippet of my on-air performance and find a way to post it (if someone can host the file for me).

Posting from CJSF 90.1FM, Simon Fraser University, in Burnaby BC Canada! WASSUP! 8)

ADDENDUM: It's a weekly two-hour show that my stepbro and stepcousin run every week from this college radio station, devoted to Caribbean music; the first half is Soca music, and the second hour is reggae. And they actually had me do a live on-air station-identification bit in Gollum's voice that flowed into the reggae half of this show, which included... Gollum singing Bob Marley's "I Shot The Sheriff" with differnt lyrics! When I return home, I'll try to access the archives so I can find a copy of the file, and get the snippets of my performances allowing those of you who missed the show to hear me (even though I didn't get a chance to practice, so I felt a little rusty).

I finally got my pics uploaded, so you can get a chance to see what this studio looks like. As I mentioned before, this is a college-radio station called CJSF 90.1-FM, held at Simon Fraser University in the greater Vancouver BC area -- the same building where Anime Evolution is held every year. All sorts of programming is all over the weekly schedule, and my younger stepbrother -- whom I nicknamed "Wheeljack" -- and stepcousin -- whom I called "Trypticon" -- usually hold two 2-hour weekly radio shows devoted to Caribbean music, on Saturday late-afternoons and Sunday nights.

I wanted to come up to the studio with them to watch them do thier show as part of my voice-related research, and after weeks of trying to get something to work out, we finally pulled it off last night. But when the show started, "Wheeljack" and "Trypticon" pulled a little surprise on me... they actually put me on -- on the spot -- as a "special guest" DJ. :eek Luckily, I kind of held my own not TOO badly, because I kind of suspected they'd try to sneak me on the air simply because I was in the studio with them. I got to do a three spots; I was part of the intro to start the show, then the halfway part of the show, and part of the closing... and on all three occasions, I did my stuff in Gollum's voice. "Trypticon" had a big laugh over the fact that "we got Gollum in the studio this week", and they actually let me introduce the second hour of the show (the all-reggae hour), joking that Gollum had taken over the station, briefly changing the name from CJSF-FM to CGLM-FM. :lol

I did manage to get some sound samples of my participation in the show, so once I figure out a way to get them uploaded (or if anyone wants to host three files about 1.5 MB on average), you'll get a chance to hear me. I'll warn you in advance, though, because I didn't get any time to warm up when I was announced as the "special guest", I do sound a little off in the sound files.

But first, the pics!

Trypticon takes a call

This station has everything, from CDs to digital recorders, to record turntables... and even 8-tracks!

Trypticon talks into the mic

Okay, so I'm not really talking; just pretending to talk while this photo was taken.

Same as before, different angle. "Wheeljack" said I looked like I was really telling off a nasty caller in this shot!

Hamming it up again. There was a stray pair of shades on the table, so I slipped them on to complete the look. And if you're wondering, no, I'm not really a DJ.

Pretending again, this time doing a sound check

Trypticon spins the tunes (for real)

"Wheeljack" finally appears, doing some paperwork as the music plays

Finally, "Gollum" is on the air, taking over the station!

*GOLLUM!* *GOLLUM!*

"You listens to CGLM-FM, Precioussss!"

And now, G1 Ravage is on the mic. No, seriously; he's ON the mic.

If things work out, I'll hopefully have the soundfiles uploaded (somehow) and post the links in here, too!

LoL That is totally awesome, Outty! XD

Great pictures! I especially like the one with Ravage on the mic. Brought back memories; me playing with my brother's G1 Ravage. Those Tfs cassettes were cool. I probably liked playing with those more than Prime or Bumblebee because some of them were animals. I should've known at that point that I'd love Beast Wars when it would came out. And I did.

Thanks for sharing! It sounds like you had so much! Of course, who wouldn't if you're into that sort of thing. I'd play with everything on the soundboard along with every other piece of equipment and go nuts.

Great pictures Gollum-for-a-day!
And the second one where you were pretending to talk
really did look like you were in a nasty discussion with
someone on the other end of the line!

Oh, man, no kidding! The Soundwave-&-Buzzsaw 2-pack was the first-ever TF I ever got (it was Christmas of '84), and I've always placed Soundwave and his cassettes VERY highly among my all-time favorite TFs in any generation. 8)

"For a day"... *chuckles* You should hear stories from people who've met me in person.....

And I finally got the audio file samples uploaded, via Putfile (I don't know how to use HTML, and I thought Putfile would do okay, until anyone can suggest a better file-uploading service that works with audio files). The guy with the strong Caribbean accent is "Trypticon", the one with the more normal-sounding voice is "Wheeljack", and I'm using my Gollum voice in my appearances in all three files. Like I said before, though, I wasn't prepared to go on the air, so I sound really off (my Gollum voice usually sounds MUCH better than this). Also, when you hear "Trypticon" referring to "NastiJag Productions", the name "NastiJag" is a portmanteau of the first parts of "Wheeljack" and "Trypticon"'s real last names.

http://media.putfile.com/CJSF-Radio---9-17-06-at-9pm (the intro of the show, with all three of us. Here, "Trypticon" ends up revealing my RL first name. Also, there's a part where I'm actually saying, "We wants the rice and the beans! We wants the conch!", but I flubbed it.)

http://media.putfile.com/CJSF-Radio---9-17-06-at-10pm (here's where "Gollum" takes over the show, and introduces the reggae-hour segment by singing an improvised remake of "I Shot The Sheriff" (imperfectly, though), which acted as a segue into the REAL Bob Marley tune. But like I said before, I was unprepared, so this really isn't my best Gollum impression ever. And it just happens to be when I'm on the air for the first time. Figures. :p )

http://media.putfile.com/CJSF-Radio---9-17-06-at-11pm (and this is our close-out for this week's show!)

 Awesome! You sound just like Andy! I can't get enough of it!

I love the accents, also. Almost sounds Jamaican.

XD I wish I could remember that Christmas, but I was only about 11 months old. >.< I didn't get my first Transformer for Christmas until 1996 (that I remember). My brother had given me Rhinox. He and I were in love with Beast Wars. It was Transformers Christmas' and birthdays from then and until this day.

Thanks! Comes from practicing over two years. ;)

Pretty darn close, OOP. :) Family background is Trinidad; in case you haven't heard of it, that's another Caribbean island, just north of Venezuela.

Came up with that one almost on the spot. If I had more practice time, maybe I'd be able to sing the whole thing on key. :p

Would you believe I was STILL trying to slow down?

Outtsyder, who's now off for some last-minute packing-&-preps before boarding the Greyhound to BotCon.... 8)

You're welcome. And I can definitely believe that!

"D'oh!"

That's cool! I've always liked that accent. It always reminds me of Cool Runnings. That movie's great; John Candy rules. :D

LoL Still, it was impressive and hilarious.
