Of Snow and Blood

Silence.

They trudged through the snow.

Unsighted, unknown

An alarm went off

High-pitched, startling

They raised their weapons

Ready

Bullets flew

Bombs sang in the crisp air

Before meeting an explosive end.

By command from their officer

They left their cover

And ran towards the enemy occupied village

They ran into a wall of fire

A blizzard of shrapnel

Around them fellow men fell

Screams cut short by the noise
of another missile being fired

Still, they ran forward.

Those who survived

Those thirty meters of hell

Took cover behind barn and barrow

Braved to stick their necks out for a moment

To aim and fire at running white targets

So well camouflaged

Like ghosts

A yell from their officer

Too many men have been buried

In snow and blood

“Fall back!” he cries

And they did try

But only two of twenty

Made it back alive
