Author’s
Note: Final
installment of the wonderfully patient Miss Specials’ series! *sighs, yawns*
And dear merciful heavens, after the week and month I’ve been through, it’s
nothing short of a miracle that I can write ANYTHING at this point, non-Beast
Wars stories included. But hey, whatever. I hope that you all have enjoyed
reading it, and again, thank you everyone for voting this as “Best Romance”
series in the 2004 Fanfiction Awards! Therefore, the disclaimer: I don’t own
Miss Special, Amadeo, Boston, or the song “Livin’ For You.”
Livin’
without you could never be so wrong
Don’t
need to say it, I never waited so long
“So
you left her all on her own?!” Starath exploded, getting to her feet and
starting towards the door. “Some caring leader you are!”
Sinead
and Sapphire turned Starath around, plopping her in a seat with a hardly-touched
dinner resting there. Sapphire was the one who spoke. “Stay and eat. We’ve
been practically breathing down Miss Spesh’s neck the entire time we’ve been
here. She needs the time on her own to get some tears out. And she hates showing
any negative emotions around others.”
“Does
a ‘duh’ strike a bell to any of you?” Hacker grumbled from her place on
the couch beside Damien. “We all needed our time alone when we first found out
that our . . . our . . . crap. What do we call them, anyway? Whatever. When we
found out that they ‘died,’ we needed our time alone to work things out in
our own way. Star, listen. If she needs us, all she has to do is walk back in,
and she has all the support she could ever wish for and then some.”
Thinking
about you in everything I do
Love
is for givin’, I know I’m livin’ for you
“What
are they talking about?”
“Me
needing time on my own,” Miss Special replied. “And how I’ve desperately
needed it, too.”
“Huh.
Well, should we go in yet?”
“No,
wait. I want to see where this is going.”
Black
eyes nodded once solemnly, smiling quietly in their dark depths.
And
I, I never needed to lie
Can’t
you see I believe in my heart when I’m saying
“But
what if something happens to her?”
“Don’t
worry. We’ll be all over that person before they could even blink,” Donovan
replied, folding his arms over his chest. “She’s one of you authors, and a
good friend to you all. You think we’d let someone hurt a friend of ours?”
“And
not t’ mention dat we’d make dem pay for anythin’ dat dey would try,”
Ajax added, grinning evilly and popping his knuckles.
“Didn’t
I tell you to stop doing that?” Sapphire demanded.
It’s
love that you see
You’re
just the one for me
I’m
prayin’
Up
for mischief, Inferno looked at Miss Special, who nodded once. She hopped
in to the shadows, but he followed her, kissing her cheek before springing back
over to knock on the screen door, calling, “Sara! Miss Special, are you in
there?!”
Said
author could hardly contain her laughter as she heard the wild clamber to open
the door and to look out upon the red-haired, black-eyed stranger. Micheal
literally shoved everyone aside as he stepped to the front. Inferno put a show
on of his “relief.” “Megatron! Good. You’ll know where she is.”
“It
is you–”
“Inferno,
yes,” the new human interrupted. “Now where is Miss Special?”
Maybe
I’m dreaming, don’t want to wake up now
Baby,
I love you, I always knew it somehow
All
of them followed Micheal as he led Inferno at a run back to the clearing. Miss
Special counted the amount of people leaving her house, then nodded. One left
inside. Two, actually. Hacker and Damien walked calmly out, and the female
switched a flashlight on, aiming it unerringly into Miss Special’s face once
before turning it off. “So what’s this about?”
“We
wanted to cause trouble,” came the answer as Miss Special walked into her
kitchen, picking Chinese food out of the containers and putting it onto a plate,
eating it calmly. “And he wanted to show them all that I can take care of
myself. Why didn’t you two fall for it?”
“I
figured that something wasn’t quite right when he came up out of nowhere like
that. So we self-elected ourselves to keep put and watch the house,” Damien
said, sitting back at his own food and chowing down. He shrugged, moving his
chopsticks around so that he could get a better grip upon the spicy, dribbly
chicken. “That, and I’m not up for chasing shadows. I’ve had enough of
that with Rampage.”
Happened
so easy, don’t need to think it through
It’s
not so amazing I’m going crazy for you
“She
was right here!” Micheal roared over the outrage that the clearing was
now deserted.
“Well,
she obviously ain’t anymore!” Ajax snapped back. He turned to
Donovan, calling, “Check dat side over . . . hey!”
Everything
stopped. Rattrap pointed to a helplessly laughing Inferno. The moment the
red-headed youth saw them watching him, he laughed harder for a moment. “Ahh,
forgive me. She wanted to finish her food in relative peace. How can I not but
indulge her?”
“Boys,”
Starath said quietly, dangerously. “Sic ’im.”
Dreaming
and hoping, hoping that dreams come true
You’re
my religion, girl, I’ve been living for you
A
laughing yell hit Miss Special’s ears the moment she swallowed the last of her
food. Nodding, she stood, shoved the chairs in, and smiled to Hacker. “Told
you he’d time it well.”
Inferno
burst into the kitchen and hid behind the author, trying to catch his breath
through bales of laughter. Megatron and Starath were still yelling at him, while
the rest were starting to see the humor in the joke. Specifically, Donovan was
the most vocal. “Sinead, will you stop laughing like that?! It wasn’t funny!”
“You
were . . . you were so worried!” she managed to get out while she held her
stomach. “Your face–” Losing it again, she just shook her head and found a
seat, her snickers and chuckles holding her captive.
Hacker
looked at Donovan. “Oh, knock it off, you overprotective scale-faced freak.
They had everything under control and you know it.”
Donovan
made a face at her before sitting next to his fiancé.
Don’t
want to fight it, tried everything I know
I
won’t deny it, you’ve everywhere I try to go
Once
things had calmed down again, and once most of the guys were passed out on the
floor, a couch, or with their head supported upon their gal’s lap in
Donovan’s case, Sapphire asked, “So you had been deposited right in the
clearing?”
Nodding,
Inferno replied, “Exactly where Miss Special had shown me the stars. Almost
precisely.”
“Did
you have any inkling upon who’s mirror was about to start up next?” Starath
asked softly. “There are a few people who I’m starting to get worried
about.”
And
I, I never needed to lie
Can’t
you see I believe in my heart when I’m saying
Remembering
with a new sort of clarity, Inferno paused, replaying his final days. “Yes.”
“Yes
there was another mirror starting up?”
“Correct.”
His voice was soft, and his hand found Miss Special’s under the table, letting
her lean into his shoulder.
Her
voice was tired, the sound of it being that she was almost asleep. “D’you
know who it was?”
It’s
love that you see
You
mean the world to me
I’m
prayin’ for you
He
brushed hair away from her face, causing the other girls to smile at each other,
knowing how sappy their guys could get when they really wanted to be sweet. His
voice was soft. “I do know. I do not know, however, if it is time to tell who
it was. They were not ready to have one of the girls from this world come and
upturn their world.”
Sinead
caught something in his voice, glancing at Hacker and Sapphire. Hacker spoke.
“You’re not talking about the usual him-or-her meaning of the word
‘they’ that’s used when someone doesn’t want to give away the gender of
an individual, are you.”
Knew
it so easy, don’t have to think it through
Love
is for givin’
I
know I’m livin’ for you
Inferno
shook his head. Miss Special sat up. “Then that means that two are
going to activate.”
“Correct
again.”
“Oh
my gosh,” Starath breathed. “Then . . . the two on this end . . .”
“They
could only be . . .” Sinead breathed.
Love
is for givin’
I
know I’m livin’ for you
“Nurannoniel and Lady Venom.”
