“Ugh. It’s so bloody hot!”
They were all hot. Bored too. The guide’s jeep had crashed on them in the middle of nowhere. Unfortunately for Lois, she and Martina were in the most troubles, as they were easily dehydrated. The rest of them: Joana, Nilay and Jenny were taking in the landscape while Martina went to scare the driver into giving them water, and the guide their money back. Africa was not what they expected. In all honesty, they expected an endless sand pit with a few random trees dotted about. Where they were, however, was at the top of a huge cliff with a magnificent waterfall below. Close by was an amazing jungle and – this was the most bizarre – snow-topped mountains in the distance. Snow…in Africa…weird.
Joana was getting on everyone’s nerves by chanting: “Bored. Bored. Bored. This Egyptian is BORED!” three times over. Poor Nilay was sitting next to her, quiet as a mouse as always.
“Alright.” Said Jenny abruptly, “I’ve had enough. I’m climbing down this cliff, and if I break my neck, you guys feel free to sue this idiot!” she indicated towards the guide, who just gave a what-did-I-do expression. She started making her way down when Martina and Joana said simultaneously, “I’m coming too!” and followed her.
“Uhh…should you two even be near a cliff top?” Nilay asked wearily. The whole group knew all too well that those two would gladly jump off a cliff, ‘just for fun’.
At the bottom (to which everyone had eventually resided for fear Joana and Martina might ‘accidentally’ go over the waterfall) on the river bank, they all just sat there, as if time were of no issue, as if they didn’t have a once-weekly plane out in 2 hours.
“God, people have no respect for this planet.” Exclaimed Jenny, picking up a large piece of scrap metal with an undistinguishable symbol on it (it looked a bit like a cat with long fangs) and a bunch of rusty wires. The others looked at each other. Tree hugger.
Lois and Nilay walked up and down the bank, talking quietly to each other, as you do. Jenny was paddling and looking at interestingly-shaped rocks, while Martina and Joana were listening to Marilyn Manson on their iPod. “Guys!” called Nilay from where she and Lois were standing a few metres downstream. “There’s something in the water!” with a combination of wet feet and beating eardrums the others approached.
“Rubbish.” said Jenny, irritably.
“Why, is there nothing there?” asked Joana.
“N there is, but it’s something someone’s just chucked in like bloody rubbish!” She made her way to pick it up.
“Jen!” yelled Lois, “That thing’s probably filthy!” she ignored her. Dripping with water, she had picked up what appeared to be a fairly large tiger head made of metal. It looked as if one of the eyes had popped out, and there was a twisted piece of metal coming out from where the neck might have been.
“OOH! Severed head!” Martina snatched it out of Jenny’s hands, and Joana tried to snatch it off her. They loved things that resembled other dead things. It looked as if it might have been in the water for a while, but the sleek black metal showed no indications of rust formation. They passed it to each other, and when it got to Nilay, she suggested, “Maybe it’s something from an Egyptian cult, you know, they worship cat-gods.” to which Lois replied, “Yeah but made of metal?” “Modern-day cult?”
“What’s that?” asked Joana. It looked like a button on the back of it just under the left ear, and of course she pushed it. It shook a little and the eyes started to glow. The mouth opened to reveal milk-white teeth and words came out of it:
“Dec – Dec – Dec – Deceptacons…FOREVER!!”
They all yelled and Nilay threw it out of her hands. They heard it play on like a broken record as it fell closer to the surface of the water. When it hit, they stared at it, and it sank slowly to the bottom of the lake. Silenced. For another four million years once more.
