Theory: Megatron and naming in general

Unread post by stinkbomb »

Megatron (Beast Wars of course) is obviosly not the first robot with that name. So why take it? Considering the usual trend of naming ones self after watever form you take (off Cybertron al least) why do certin transformers tend to maintain a single name, like Megs or Primal?

Is it a rank thing?

How are you named in the first place?

How form-dependent are the names?

Why is BW Megatron named Megatron?

My theory:
A transformer does not start with an alternet form. I think that as a coming of age cerimony transformers choose an occupation (think the tech spechs functions) and with it a name. All forms taken after the first cause the name to be a deviation on the origonal Cybertronian name, or not changed at all. Megatron seems to think of himself as a savior of the predicons and i believe took the anme Megatron After he met Cryotec. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cryotek

I post this with the extreem hope that all of you will voice your own opinions, as that is what makes forums so great.[/url]

I believe that a transformer has their given name, and then they later earn a name. Either through deeds or by assuming a beast mode. Except the renaming is informal.

For example: Salvus, who flies like an ace, wins a particularly fantastic victory against Predacon pirates. His friends comment he's much like the Silverbolt of old. Inspired by such, he takes on the new name of Silverbolt.

In Megatron's case, whatever name he started with, he abandoned his old name and took on the name of the old Decepticon leader before he went loopy as Galvatron. This of course, did not sit well with the Tripredicus council, who seemed to be trying to take over Cybertron through political intrigue.

Megatron wanted military action, and thus, rebelled, stealing the Golden Disc, recruiting a small crew, stealing a Predacon corvette and fleeing Cybertron.

That's my theory ^_^

Isn't there a car battery brand called Megatron? That's why it was used. Someone was looking under the hood of their car and found the perfect name in large white letters; MEGATRON.

XD

Hey, you never know. *shrugs*

Well for Megatron, he took his name from the Covenant of Primus, specifically one of the passages he reads in Nemesis Pt 3. "And you will know my name is Megatron when I lay my vengenance upon thee" as he says so himself.

Optimus Primal was named for his ancestor Optimus Prime, once again as he himself mentioned and it seems to me, in BW they obviously like to change names when they pick up a new alt mode. (As both crews picked out new names for themselves at the begining of the show.)

Beyond that I think they have a name they are given at sparking, and they can change it whenever they like. Though I'm assuming it's something like changing your name here is and rather complicated unless you know you're stranded on a distant planet fighting the Beast Wars.

For other series, Optimus Prime was named by Alpha Trion, Likewise Rodimus Prime was given his new name byt he prievious Matrix bearer Optimus. So possibly the passing of the Matrix to a true leader signifites a new name. The origonal Megatron is also assumed to have picked his name from the Covenant of Primus, most likely cause it'd be rather freaky name for a Gladiator to have. Much like having the Undertaker be a wrestler.

The Other Bot and Cons of old tended to have function specific names such as Ironhide the tough guy, Blurr the fast guy, Springer the jumping dude, or alt mode specific names such as Bumblebee the Bug, Prowl the Police Car, etc.
