Fear

By: Sinead

Author’s Note: Got the CD, and now inspiration will run rampant for a while. I think that I like this, y’know? Heh . . . think of it . . . a Dinobot fan, used to writing romances for that lovable hunk of metal, and yet here I am, with a Rattrap romance unfolding, and a Megatron romance finished. Odd, hn? I actually like the challenge! Okay, I don’t own Sapphire, Rattrap, Beast Wars, Sarah McLachlan, the song “Fear,” or anything that’s copyrighted that I don’t know about. Enjoy!

Morning smiles

Like the face of a newborn child

Innocent unknowing

Sapphire sat up in her bed, feeling something wrong. She walked to her mirror, knowing that once again, it was the only one in the world that connected to the Beast Wars. Starath had been connected to that prehistoric world for a far shorter time than Sapphire or Sinead had been, yet she already had her “life-companion,” as Sinead had called it fondly, once she and Dinobot, now known as Donovan, had gotten back from their road trip. The end of that trip had landed them at Starath’s house, and Sapphire met the author for the first time, but hopefully not for the last.

The girl walked through the mirror.

Winter’s end

Promises a of a long lost friend

Speaks to me of comfort

Rattrap knew that something had burst within him. Quickstrike had gotten in a lucky shot, and both knew that it wouldn’t be fixed. The truce was near shambles, and had Rampage not intervened, then there would be hell to pay. There was nothing to do about it . . . except send Rhinox to get Sapphire . . . and to tell her what happened to him.

He clutched his fist weakly, and Optimus rested his hand upon that of his spy’s. “You did well, Rattrap. Thank you.”

But I fear I have nothing to give

I have so much to lose here in this lonely place

Sapphire walked into the sickbay, numb at the news, led by Silverbolt, who had his hand upon her shoulder. Rattrap looked up at her, and winced slightly at the movement. She rushed over to him, and took his hand in hers, then reached up with her free hand to rest it upon the side of his head. “Rattrap . . .”

“Wait,” he said, looking at Optimus. “Boss Monkey . . . sorry ’bout everythin’ I put ’ya through.”

“Rattrap, believe me, it’s all been forgiven.” The leader smiled sadly, and said, “I’ll inform everyone that you and Sapphire are together, and . . . and not to be disturbed.” His smile was sad. “See you on the other side of time, Rattrap.”

Tangled up in our embrace

There’s nothing I’d like better than to fall

But I fear I have nothing to give

As soon as the leader was out of the room, Silverbolt bowed his head, and said, “I will hope that we meet again.” He turned and left.

Sapphire reached around Rattrap, and managed to embrace him. He wrapped his arms around her once more, and sighed. His breathing was becoming irregular, and he was hurting. Sapphire knew this. She didn’t let go, as she said, “I . . . I never want you to be alone again, Rattrap.”

Wind in time

Rapes the flower trembling on the vine

And nothing yields to shelter it

“I don’t wanna die,” Rattrap said, his voice clearly shaking. “I . . . I don’t wanna leave ’ya t’ mourn.”

Sapphire pulled away slightly, and closed her eyes, letting the tears fall. “Me neither. I don’t want you to leave, but . . .”

“Yeah. It’s . . . it’s necessary.”

From above

They say that temptation will destroy our love

The never-ending hunger

She kissed his cheek, and said, “I’ll love you wherever you are, you know.”

“I know . . . an’ I hope dat I’ll never forget da time we’ve had t’gether, Sapph . . .”

“I don’t think I’ll ever love someone like . . .” Unable to finish her sentence, Sapphire broke into tears, resting her forehead upon Rattrap’s own, wishing . . . hoping . . .

But I fear I have nothing to give

I have so much to lose here in this lonely place

Rattrap stiffened, feeling the separation of his soul and his body start. His grip tightened slightly, and he whispered, “Sapph . . .”

“Don’t worry, Rattrap,” she breathed in return, feeling her tears come faster and with more pain from her heart than before. “I’m here . . . don’t worry. I’ll stay with you.”

“Hurts . . .”

Tangled up in your embrace

There’s nothing I’d like better than to fall

But I fear I have nothing to give

“I’m here,” Sapphire nearly yelped. Her voice caught in her throat, and she carefully, gently, unable to say anything else to express her love for him, kissed him. He shuddered once, and then looked into her eyes.

I have so much to lose

She smiled once, sadly, and his broken voice rasped out what he had wanted to ask her all those weeks ago, before Starath had made a fuss in the Predacon’s base.

Sapphire accepted it.

I have nothing to give

Rattrap smiled, and a dazzling eruption of light burst from between them, swallowing the Spark beginning to rise from the shell . . . and the human.

Both were sent to the same time . . . but not the same place.

We have so much to lose

Sapphire opened her eyes, sitting upon her floor, looking into the mirror, seeing the tear stains upon her cheeks. She looked at her hands, and then bowed her head, letting her tears flow. She didn’t know that Rattrap . . . was still alive.

“Goodbye, Rattrap.”
