Author’s
Note: “Through
the Clouds and Into Your Heart” is the series. And who knew that it would
begin to take shape like this? I thank Nurannoniel for being so patient with me
while I began to get this out, since me and the family have moved out of the box
we were living in, and into a two-family. Thank. God. It’s been a long road
since I started to take this project on, and longer still before I actually had
the chance to sit down and being to write it. I do not own Nurannoniel, Beast
Wars, Optimus Primal, Michelle Branch or her song “Everywhere.”
To
Nurann: Again, I
can’t stress enough that your input upon this series, whether it be upon
simple spelling or grammatical errors to inaccuracies of both or either your
character or Optimus’ character. This series is a gift to you, but I want to
make sure that it’s something that fits your tastes and ideas and dreams. So
edit away!
Turn
it inside out so I can see
The
part of you that’s drifting over me
Standing
before her window, Nurannoniel pondered the pre-spring weather. At least it was
fairly warm, but it was foggy, too. Fog blurred lines, creating new ones in
their stead, masking the details and always moving to create new ones as it
went. Smiling, she turned away from the now-twilighting sights of the billowing,
shifting cloudforms to lounge upon her bed with a well-read book and a warm
drink.
And
when I wake you’re . . . you’re never there
But
when I sleep you’re . . . you’re everywhere
You’re
everywhere
Optimus
turned over, trying to sleep. The day had been nothing but trouble. Rampage was
missing, possibly trying to kill himself. Again. Optimus suppressed the groan at
the memory of the discovery when they had first found out the Transmetal crab
was trying to find out how he, himself could die. The mess. The sheer mess.
Sighing,
Optimus turned over again, away from the wall, trying to turn his thoughts from
that particular subject. He shut his optics off, sighing. And, as it had been
for the last few weeks, a feeling that someone . . . kind, caring . . . loving .
. . she was waiting just on the other side of slumber.
Just
tell me how I got this far
Just
tell me why you’re here and who you are
Everything
went dark. Nurannoniel’s head snapped up from where she had been reading under
her side-table lamp to look around her room. Her alarm-clock’s face was black,
her computer was dark. Blast. She sighed at the annoyance of a power-outage,
reaching under her bed to grab at her flashlight to turn and walk towards her
door . . . and stopped, staring through the darkness at her mirror.
A
faint light flickered in it. Right where darkness was on her side.
’Cause
every time I look you’re never there
And
every time I sleep you’re always there
Rhinox
looked in on his commander, one whom he did his best to protect as a younger
brother. Smiling, seeing him sleep almost-peacefully, he closed the door, going
back to sit watch. Things were different since Rattrap and Dinobot were gone.
Quieter. It was even more odd with Megatron gone, now that they didn’t have to
defend their base around every corner. Depth Charge was gone, so there was no
more bots to patch up when they got into a scuffle, truce or no truce.
Inferno
was gone, too. It was getting really quiet. And Rhinox didn’t know what would
happen when Optimus’ Spark-sworn, soulmate, would come. He didn’t want to
think about it.
’Cause
you’re everywhere to me
And
when I close my eyes it’s you I see
Nurannoniel
stood, flashlight forgotten as she faced the mirror, then opened her door,
looking at the back of where the mirror would be. There wasn’t any signs of
water-damage . . . so that meant that the water-balloon her brother chucked at
the door didn’t get through to her mirror. Closing the door and looking at the
edges of her mirror, she could’ve sworn that the tarnishing around
the edges were from age. She had insisted.
Her
cell phone rang, startling her. Flipping it open, she answered it. “Hello?”
It
was Starath’s number.
You’re
everything I know that makes me believe
I’m
not alone
I’m
not alone
Micheal
spoke. “Something odd is up.”
“Why?
Where’s Starath?”
“Online.
Researching something. Two towns simultaneously lost electricity in Canada five
minutes ago.” The former Predacon leader/tyrant stared at it. “Each time a
mirror activated for the first time in North America, there was a power flux
that was recorded, but it was either noted as a power-outage or just more power
than usual flooding into the area. Infe . . . Amadeo and myself have been
keeping track of your town and Lady Venom’s. Both areas that we had hacked
into now are down, no power.”
I
recognize the way you make me feel
It’s
hard to think that you might not be real
Nurann
swallowed. “P-put Starath on.”
Micheal
did so without an argument, hearing the tone in the other woman’s voice.
Starath’s voice now came through the receiver. “Are you all right, Nurann?”
“No.
I have to get off the line.”
“What’s
wrong.”
“Tell
. . . tell Sinead and Sapph that they were right. I have to get to him. I’ll
call you and tell you how he is.” She turned the phone off, leaving it on the
bed behind her, walking through the mirror without a second thought.
I
sense it now, the water’s getting deep
I
try to wash the pain away from me
Away
from me
Optimus
tossed, his dreams recreating the nightmare of finding Rampage at different
times when he had tried to terminate his Spark. Crying out, he thrashed
slightly, then trembled.
Nurann
watched silently, not knowing how to proceed. Finally, she bit her lip, and
walked over to the Transmetal’s side, towards the head of the bed. Her hand
traced over his shoulder timidly, and when he did not awaken, she moved up to
rest her hand over his forehead.
He
heaved a sigh.
’Cause
you’re everywhere to me
And
when I close my eyes it’s you I see
His
dreams calmed abruptly. A feeling of total peace wrapped him up in an embrace,
stopping the nightmares, holding them at bay. He looked slowly around the place
of peaceful white waterfalls, soft greenery and black, glistening rocks, and
closed his eyes in his dream, a song from his childhood reaching his ears.
Nurann
was humming an old favorite tune of all the authors, one that always brought a
smile to those who heard it. One that reminded them to hope. One that reminded a
few that there would hopefully be someone from the Wars to open their hearts.
You’re
everything I know that makes me believe
I’m
not alone
I’m
not alone
Optimus
awoke humming the refrain, then sighed, activating his optics. And met blue eyes
hovering in an upside-down face. He didn’t move, lest he scare . . .
Primus.
The
Spark-sworn.
His
Spark-sworn.
And
when I touch your hand
It’s
then I understand
“Can
it really be you?” he whispered, the words unbidden as he reached up to touch
the hand that still rested upon his forehead.
She
smiled, sounding breathless. “Me? Probably.” Her smile widened, and she
laughed softly. “I hope that you haven’t been visiting other mirrors behind
my back.”
“And
risk your precious trust?” Optimus continued in a whisper, feeling unable to
do more than that.
The
beauty that’s within
Its
now that we begin
She
moved so that he could sit up, and stood a bit apart from him, giving him the
opportunity to look her over, to see her physical strengths and weaknesses while
she did the same. He couldn’t help himself in that regard; he was a leader by
trade and by soul. Grinning, she literally threw herself into his chest,
laughing and hugging him.
You
always light my way
I
hope there never comes a day
Blinking
down at her in slight shock, Optimus allowed himself a chuckle, embracing her
carefully. “Tell me your name.”
“Nurannoniel.”
“.
. .”
No
matter where I go
I
always feel you so
Laughing
a bit harder at his response, the authoress looked up at him. “But I’m
called Nurann for short. And you’re Optimus Primal.”
“You
know me,” he replied softly.
“Yep.
I’ll show you how, soon.” Her tone turned mock-serious. “But not until you
prove that you’re ready for the shock!”
’Cause
you’re everywhere to me
And
when I close my eyes it’s you I see
Optimus
laughed at the expression she wore, his Spark feeling lighter than it had in
months. “Tell me how my troops are doing.”
“Do
you know their human names?”
“No,
only Dinobot’s: Donovan.”
You’re
everything I know that makes me believe
I’m
not alone
Smiling,
Nurann reached up to touch his face, unable to resist the temptation, her eyes
bright and happy. “I annoy Dinobot and call him Dee-Bee, but he’s doing
well. Him and Sinead are organizing a few gatherings over the next few months.
Dinobot’s getting a job as some sort of karate or sword-fighting teacher, and
it’s gonna pay him well. Rattrap is known as Ajax. Him and Sapphire have moved
from South Africa to England, and have their own place there. They call it a
flat, but it’s really just a small apartment. He’s working as a
computer-expert in reverse hacking–”
“Now
that shocks me.”
Nurann
snorted a laugh. “No kidding. I asked Sapph the same thing. ‘You sure
that he’s not hacking into the systems?’ Yeah, that was fun to hear him deny
it outright. I don’t believe him.”
’Cause
you’re everywhere to me
And
when I catch my breath it’s you I breathe
Brushing
his hand over her hair, Optimus asked, “What about Depth Charge?”
“That
. . . that hunk is hilarious.”
The
Maximal blinked at her. “What?”
“I’ve
annoyed him to the point of no return, and Hacker can say one word, and he’ll
shut up. But he’s really sweet on her, too. I mean, I haven’t met him in
real life, but just listening to them talking is so sweet. They banter here and
there, and they have just a great time with each other while he’s figuring out
what he’s gonna work at.”
You’re
everything I know that makes me believe
I’m
not alone
They
talked long into the night about those who had become human, and how they had
acted as Cybertronians. What their pet peeves were, what they loved and hated,
who they worked best with . . . everything. They talked about the authoresses
and how they were the perfect opposites to the loves of their lives.
After
a long silence, Optimus looked to Nurann, seeing she was asleep. He picked her
up and brought her into her room, carefully maneuvering around the walls and
desk to place her upon her bed softly. He had learned a great deal about Nurann
in how she spoke of the others, and he felt that she had learned about him in
the same way.
You’re
in everyone I see
So
tell me
Do
you see me?
Sitting beside her bed, he brushed his hand against her cheek, watching her as she traversed the strange terrain of her dreams . . .
